WHAT DOES A PARTY LOOK LIKE?
WHAT DO YOU DO IN A PRIVATE MERMAID SCHOOL PARTY?
We have a silly, fun, great time in the water! We start with swim tests to check out the abilities of guests. If the party guests are where they need to be as safe swimmers then the Finstructor leads the mermaid class in untailed drills and skill practice before donning the fabric rentals tails, repeating the drills and skills in the fabric rental tails, and having a chance for free swim / play time in a pool depth suitable for the group's safety and ability. Once free swim is over it's time to dry off and enjoy the rest of your party!
HOW OLD DO YOU NEED TO BE?
While age isn't a guarantee of swim ability, this party works the best for age 8 or older. Children under the age of 8 rarely have the water awareness, emotional control, and/or endurance suitable for this offering and present a significant risk to themselves and others. As a result we encourage you to NOT invite children under the age of 8 to your event OR to go with a Mini Mers Pool Party package instead as Mini Mers does not involve mermaid tail rentals and is more adaptable for weaker swimmers and a variety of ages.
If your child has a younger sibling we recommend that you talk with the younger child about the party before it happens and express that when they get older, work hard in their swim lessons, and become a super good swimmer, that they might be able to learn to be a mermaid too.
DO GUESTS NEED ANY PREVIOUS MERMAID OR MERMAN EXPERIENCE?
No, our classes are geared for beginning merpeople with no prior fin experience. You DO need to be a strong swimmer though, please see below.
DO GUESTS NEED TO BE ABLE TO SWIM? WHAT ARE THE REQUIRED SWIM SKILLS?
YES. Fabric tail mermaid school mermaid training is for strong, confident swimmers only. Our swimmers are in the water and swimming for most of an hour.
Most children in our Mermaid School classes come from swim team or multi-year formal swim lesson backgrounds. Swim tests are done at the beginning of each LA Mermaid School lesson. Any person failing the swim test may continue in the class but will NOT be allowed to put on a costume for their own safety, may not be allowed to participate in all activities or drills (such as "deep end swimming"), and will be asked to sit out of the water if their presence is considered to be endangering themselves or others or "taking away" time and/or staff attention from the class as a whole.
Please do not endanger your child or guests. Before sending your party invitations you should ensure that the person(s) invited can consistently do the following:
- Swim 25 yards (75 feet) without stopping using proper front crawl or breath stroke swim technique WITHOUT displaying "distressed swimmer" indicators per American Red Cross Standards (e.g. must be making deliberate forward progress in water, able to keep head above water for air when needed, not flail in the water).
- Display independence, comfort, and confidence while swimming in the water (e.g. no hanging on to parents / wall, floaties, randomly going in to a fetal position and sinking to the bottom of the pool, crying over getting their face wet, hiding in a corner, endangering self or others, complaining, or otherwise appearing to be confused, panicked, upset, or disoriented etc.).
- Be comfortable placing entire body (including face/head) underwater and swimming below the water's surface.
- Be able to safely retrieve a submerged object (such as a dive ring) from a depth of 5'.
- Tread water using arms only (no legs) for 1 minute or more.
- Float on the back for 1 minute or longer.
- If a guest is unable to complete these swim skills then this party is NOT a good choice for them and you may wish to reserve a Mini Mers Pool Party with us instead that does not feature rental tails and is adaptable for weaker swimmers.
CAN BOYS / MEN COME?
IS THERE A LIFEGUARD?
Yes, one lifeguard is supplied with this private party package. The lifeguard stays on the pool deck unless they need to make an in water assist for a troubled swimmer.
WHAT IS A FINSTRUCTOR?
A Finstructor is a swimming trainer for mermaids. They are humans (frequently our professional mermaids appearing in their human form with legs) who teach mermaid training. Please note that with a Mermaid School Party you are NOT receiving a full silicone tailed mermaid as your teacher; your teacher is a human. Based on experience we have found that Finstructors have to be humans to be able to quickly assist swimmers and demonstrate techniques using the same fabric rental tails as guests for people to be able to effectively learn.
If you would like a realistic tailed swimming mermaid performer added on to your party to be present for photos and swim with guests we can do that. Adding on a professional realistic tailed mermaid is an additional $350 per hour charge to this package. That specialty mermaid is separate from the Finstructor / Lifeguard and does NOT lead the tail training activities.
WHAT DO GUESTS NEED TO BRING?
Each Mermaid School party participant needs to bring sandals, goggles, a secure swim suit (one piece swim suits tend to be the most practical), sunblock, 2 towels, and a change of dry clothes to change in to. We encourage parents to offer goggles as party favors as kids tend to forget them and do much better in the water with them.
Rental mermaid tails (10 maximum) are included in your party package price. If you would like to buy your own please order it at least 2 weeks before your class by CLICKING HERE. Use of any personal owned mermaid tails are subject to the approval of the instructor - if a small child shows up with a mermaid tail and is not a strong enough swimmer to use it they will be told to not put it on. Please advise swimmers to leave jewelry and valuables at home.
WILL MY POOL WORK FOR THIS PARTY?
Pool parties can be a LOT of fun but we need your help to prepare your pool to emphasize safety and offer you the smoothest experience possible. We have found that the pools that work the best for this party have a steps or shallow area large enough for all party participants to line up shoulder to shoulder on to do our drills. Pools with shallow areas (e.g. 3.5' deep sections that can fit all of the guests while learning) are essential for the safety of guests to learn in as shallow pools allow students to stand up if they feel uncoordinated or uncomfortable.
While Pinterest makes giant inflatable floating balls, oversized animals, and other hipster toys look fun and "trendy," these items present a major safety issue for lifeguard supervision of guests and MUST be removed from the water during our staff's time at your party. Due to their size and opaque nature, young children can easily get trapped under them, disoriented, and drown and/or view riding on them with a false sense of security leading to "falling in" to water that is past their ability level.
We also need your help with your guests to make our pool parties run smoothly. Any people hazards such as people trying to jump on top of party guests from the deck of a roof, pulling or pushing swimmers under water, throwing children in to the water who lack swim skills, shooting guests with water guns, blocking the paths or swim routes of students, or parents who attempt to interfere with the water safety protocols of our staff and encourage guests to either exceed their swimming abilities, disrespect, or ignore the Finstructor must be removed from the pool area or all action at the party will be stopped until the situation is fixed.
Water "feels" 15 degrees colder than its associated air temperature. As a result, pools need to be heated to US Swim standards of 86 degrees (F) or higher to prevent guests from developing hypothermic symptoms and being cranky.
If your pool does not sound like it will work for this party you can either check with your local community pool to rent space there or you can go with our popular "Mini Mers" pool party instead ("Mini Mers" does not include rental tails and is a group games based package that is more adaptable to a variety of swim levels and ages).
WHO CAN USE THE FABRIC RENTAL TAILS?
Costume and equipment usage is dependent on successful swim skill demonstration in class and size restrictions regardless of age. We offer both child and adult sizes including tails for adults up to 250 pounds and up to approximately 6'4" tall.
Any person displaying signs of diarrhea, rashes, blisters, open wounds, chicken pox, or other skin conditions or reporting a recent history of any recent skin disease will not be allowed to use a LA Mermaid School owned fabric rental tail and may not be allowed in the pool to avoid infecting other swimmers.
Fabric rental tails are available during Mermaid School training segments only - these rental tails are NOT for kids to keep; they are company-owned products and are taken away when our team's contracted time is over.
CAN MY CHILD CHOOSE THE FABRIC RENTAL TAIL THAT THEY WANT TO USE?
No. Just like people come in all different sizes fabric rental tails do too. For safety it is very important that people wear fabric rental tails that fit them properly. A poorly fitting tail can prevent a person from swimming well (frustrating the swimmer and causing bad feelings) or endanger their ability to surface and breathe. As a result, fabric rental tails are assigned to participants based on foot size and weight rather than what color the person likes.
If it is important for you to allow your child to wear their favorite color at your party or to be able to keep what they wear please visit http://www.sheroesentertainment.com/store to purchase a fabric tail for them to keep in that color.
CAN I BUY A TAIL FOR MY CHILD OR GUESTS?
Yes. If you want you child to use their favorite color during the party or offer fabric tails for guests to KEEP after our team leaves, you can buy your own fabric mermaid tails. Please visit http://www.sheroesentertainment.com/store to view fabric tail purchase options. We recommend ordering any mermaid tail gifts at least two weeks in advance so that your purchase has time to be shipped to you.
