This set is "closed" to the general public to ensure that each student has the privacy and attention that they need to train and focus during their underwater time. Address information will be sent to enrolled students the before the shoot for its Simi Valley location.
WHERE DO I PARK?
There is free street parking at the venue.
CAN MY FRIEND COME?
Yes. You are allowed to bring your own makeup artist / hair stylist and one friend to pose with you during your in water time (if desired). That person can be a child, fiancee, mom, dad, or other.
Please DO NOT bring pets unless they are certified and card-carrying service animals in uniform. We are NOT a dog hotel. If you bring a child that child must be directly supervised by you at all times.
I WORK FOR THE PRESS, CAN I COME?
Yes, we do work with the press from mainstream news sources on coverage of workshops like this. Please call us at (805) 328-4911 for clearance and coordination if you are a reporter and are doing a feature. Please note that press is scheduled for the first opening of a day due to crew load in time.
HOW WARM IS THE POOL?
The pool tends to start around 88-90 degrees for the first shoot of the date and then gradually drops as time progresses, ending up around 82-84 degrees in the late afternoon.
CAN I PRACTICE WITH A COACH BEFORE MY SHOOT?
If you would like a pre-session coaching lesson please schedule a private lesson. Please note that pre-sessions may not be done on the day of the shoot as the shoot days start too early for our crew. It is advised to do a pre-session 1 week in advance so that you have time to test wardrobe and concepts before the big day. Pre-shoot lessons are done at a local community pool with a temperature of 78-82 degrees.
CAN SOMEONE DO MY MAKEUP FOR ME?
Yes. We have a makeup artist available for $75 per model, payable directly to the artist prior to your shoot date. Makeup takes one hour to complete and needs to be started no later than one hour prior to the shoot time. Please let us know at the time of reservation if you are interested in adding on makeup and, if so, for how many people.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
- At least one costume / wardrobe choice
- Nude or flesh colored swimsuit or other undergarments to wear under your costume
- A change of clothing for after the shoot
- Water bottle
- Props (if desired)
- Waterproof makeup (if desired)
- SCUBA diving belt that fits your waist with nylon weight pouches and (6) 1 pound lead shot dive weights
- Sinus Saver Nose Plugs (if desired, highly recommended)
- Swimming VENTED ear plugs (if desired)
While this shoot is being run by one of our LA Mermaid School instructors, and both mermaids and mermen are welcome to bring their tails to the shoot, it is not mermaid-specific. You are highly encouraged to use your imagination in your costume and bring options to review with our team on set such as dresses, monster outfits, etc. Wigs, horns, and other props are welcome in this shoot.
Please be sure to water-test any fabric to ensure that the dye does not run before bringing it to set. Any sequins or other decorations MUST be hand sewn securely on to wardrobe. NO GLITTER IS ALLOWED IN THE WATER ON ANYTHING as it ruins the water clarity, does not "read" well on camera, and takes weeks to get out of he pool. Please note that our crew may refuse to let you put any type of costume, makeup, or object in the water for any reason if they believe that it will impact the water's clarity or leave debris in the pool.
Props are allowed - it is recommended to buoyancy test them before arrival.
CAN YOU LEND ME A SILICONE PROFESSIONAL MERMAID TAIL?
Fabric tails are available for the shoot of the style like FinFin and The2Tails. Due to their high fragility and intensive training required to use effectively in a pool space we are unable to offer any of the company's silicone tails for rent.
It is recommended that if you are attending for your first time that you focus on long, flowing dresses as they are easier to learn in and offer the most 3D posing options.
HOW MANY OUTFIT CHANGES DO I GET?
We do not limit the number of outfit changes that you can do in your allotted time with us. While there is no limit on the number of outfit changes, on average, a solo model will have enough time for 2-3 outfits.
WHAT KINDS OF OUTFITS OR COSTUMES WORK THE BEST IN WATER?
Models bring their own props (when using them) and costumes as each person has their own unique vision. It is highly recommended to practice with props and costumes before the shoot date to ensure that you are comfortable with them and know how they will act in water for buoyancy. In general, lightweight chiffons, organzas, and open week mesh fabric work well under water. Brighter colors like orange, fushia, yellow, and the like show up well as do prints. If you are looking for a softer, more "watercolor" effect then blues, light greens, lavender purple, and pinks add well to that look. For inspiration we recommend looking at the underwater portfolios and images online of Cheryl Walsh, Hannah Fraser, and Brenda Stumpf and seeing what outfits you like. If you have a SCUBA dive belt and weights and are able to hide them under your outfit please bring them.
For women posing in "implied" or "full" states (including pasties) - please advise us if you will be doing an implied or full nude state so that we can ensure that you are provided with extra privacy and that no children are on site during your time.
NO GLITTER OR FEATHERS ARE ALLOWED ON COSTUMES.
WHAT COLOR IS THE BACKDROP?
DO I NEED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL SWIMMER?
No; based on the structure of the set you do not need to be an expert swimmer. You DO need to be comfortable submerging your body under water, holding your breath under water for at least 20 seconds (more if preferred), and going under water with your face and head submerged.
WHEN WILL I GET MY PHOTOS?
We typically deliver the free bonus photos from your shoot within 45 business days.
You are solely responsible for being fully in makeup, hair, and costume at your scheduled start time.
No time extensions will be provided if you are late or delayed in starting at your start time if caused by you and/or your makeup artist etc.
IS FOOD AVAILABLE ON SITE?
Yes, our hostess is an exceptional cook (seriously, it's one of the main reasons why we shoot here!), and offers a delicious home-style catered lunch at $15 per person. If you would like to arrive early (or stay late) and have lunch with us please let us know at least one week prior to the shoot date with any known allergies.
LOCAL HOTELS IN SIMI VALLEY
You are responsible for securing your own ground transportation.
Uber or Lyft both service Simi Valley. You can alternately take the train (Amtrak or Metrolink) from Bobe Hope / Burbank Airport (BUR) to Simi Valley and then take Uber, Lyft, or a taxi from the station to the site. Please make sure to check any train schedules before assuming that train transportation is available. The Ventura County Line is the train line that runs to Simi Valley from Burbank Airport (BUR).
AIR TRANSPORTATION & FLIGHTS
If you are flying in the closest airport is Bob Hope, or Burbank Airport (BUR). We highly recommend "acting like a local" and flying in to BUR if possible to avoid lengthy delays, lines, and frustration at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Due to construction, poor traffic flow, and political protests, LAX, while seemingly equal in distance on a map to the location, takes at least an extra hour to get out of before placing you on one of the most congested freeways in the country for an additional 1-2.5 hours of traffic to get to the site. BUR is a much smaller airport near a faster-moving freeway which enables it to provide faster service than LAX.
MAKEUP ARTIST PORTFOLIO SPECIFICS
If you are a Special FX (SFX) makeup artist (MUA) who desires to showcase their labor-intensive looks at this shoot we can accommodate you with a shared 10x20 shaded outdoor space with electricity for your kit. If you need extra time before a shoot for airbrush and prosthetic work please let us know with your approximate prep time (makeup artists / SFX teams please ONLY sign up for the last session of each day to allow you enough time to prep).
PAX style paint / adhesive does not work well in water for this type of shoot. We recommend alcohol-based airbrush makeup instead if you are using a specialty product.
This class is non-refundable and is not eligible for any refunds due to cancellations.
